- In December 2008 The Hon Gary Gray AO MP, and The Hon Phillip Costa MP, announced the formation of a new Federal-State regional development organisation to be called Regional Development Australia (RDA)
- It is intended that the new organisation will commence operation on 1 July 2009 following the merging of the existing thirteen State-funded Regional Development Boards and the Federally-funded Area Consultative Committees
- The initiative is intended to improve cooperation across all levels of government by better aligning efforts and resources to achieve better economic and community development outcomes for regional NSW
- Local RDAs will perform a range of functions including consultation and community engagement, government policy advice, regional planning and coordination, promoting and facilitating access to government programs, solution brokering, delivery of programs and community development
- In the Mid North Coast, Mr Mark Livermore has been appointed Interim Chair, and Mr Richard O’Leary has been appointed Interim Deputy Chair. Their roles are to work with the existing regional development organisations (the Mid North Coast Regional Development Board and the Mid North Coast Area Consultative Committee) and other stakeholders to ensure the smooth transition to the new organisation
- This will include identifying a diverse range of issues that will need to be clarified in the establishment of the new organisation. (As an example, the MNCACC’s region extends across eight LGAs from Coffs Harbour in the north to Great Lakes in the south and includes Gloucester, while the MNCRDB’s region only extends across 6 LGAs. It is proposed that the new RDA will align with State Boundaries and therefore Great Lakes and Gloucester will come under the Hunter RDA);
- Expressions of Interest are being publicly sought for persons interested in being appointed to the Management Committee of Regional Development Australia – Mid North Coast (including the Chair and Deputy positions). It is envisaged that the RDA-MNC Management Committee will specifically include regional LGA representation.
